Does university make you thicker?
There’s an awful lot of talk about how university makes you smarter. The theory goes like this, as if you need to be told: you take in information, and facts, and figures, and talk about these many things with other people all in this one place for one reason. You party, you have fun, and most importantly when you exit this ecosystem of continual factage (not a word but I like it and this is my blog so there!) you are ready to educate the world in a way which it has been waiting for for literally forever. But there’s a problem…I happen to think university actually kills your brain, and here are a few reasons to back my abstract theory up:
We all know that a few too many pints can result in memory loss…which might just mean that all the information you have taken in earlier during the day has just been lost for good…
1) Too much studying: look at marketing consultants for example! All they do is study at uni, and after that’s had its effect on them they turn into merciless, money hungry robots! OK, so I completely made that up…and actually I completely take it back, too. I might want to go into marketing one day and I don’t want any marketing people reading this and thinking that I don’t care, because I do (and I also want money as much as the next person, truth be told).
2) While you’re studying, you might well be taking facts in, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you are learning: it’s a well proven fact that not everything we see or hear or read is taken in. Much of it is forgotten, actually. So maybe we’d all be better off studying in the real world? Without having to sit through lectures and the like? There’s a reason why people are proud of saying they studied at the university of life.
3) Boredom can be a killer: too much studying equals boredom, and that can be a dangerous thing indeed. Before long you’re forgetting things left and right, and by the end of the course you’re actually worse and less intelligent than when you went in!
4) The food at university is nothing to write home about: to study marketing, and the like, you really need a good dosage of quality brain food. Yet a lot of students eat utter rubbish and drink themselves into a stupor, which brings us to…
5) Drinking isn’t exactly good for the mind! We all know that a few too many pints can result in memory loss…which might just mean that all the information you have taken in earlier during the day has just been lost for good. A sobering thought, especially when it comes to paying that money back in a few years'time…
